About Somatic Explorations

Our History

Somatic Explorations was born out of a frustration that many health care professionals do not have access to Human Gross Anatomy.  Chris Hagey, RMT was first exposed to the wonders of the human body when training to be a Registered Massage Therapist in Ontario in 1994. He was fortunate enough to have access to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College both during school and as a Teaching Assistant.

In 2004 he was given the opportunity to accompany the students of the Boucher Institue of Naturopathic Medicine on their 6-day intensive full dissection at the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon.  Every year since then he has attended both as a student of anatomy and as a teacher.

Waiting a full year to be able to study anatomy again was incredibly frustrating and Chris decided to do something about it.  It took four years of banging on the doors of innumerable government departments, a quest to locate at least two donors to get the Lab running, and finding a suitable space with an agreeable landlord.

Somatic Explorations Inc is the first of its kind in Canada, providing regulated health care professionals access to human anatomy to improve their skills, knowledge, and practices.

Profile - Chris Hagey, President

Chris has been a Registered Massage Therapist since graduating from Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 1993. He was first introduced to gross anatomy while a student, as CCMH had a great relationship with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and the massage therapists were granted access to the cadavers being used by the Chiropractic students.  He was hooked.

Chris went on to both practice and teach in Ontario, Florida, and finally BC where he became the Director of Practical Education for the West Coast College of Massage Therapy from 2002 - 2007.  He was also fortunate enough to have ties to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster.  For the last 6 years, Chris has accompanied the naturopathic students to their anatomy dissections in Saskatoon or Seattle and has been a well respected instructor.

Having performed over 76 dissections and spent countless hours in the lab, Chris is finally living his dream of being able to share the incredible mysteries found in the human body with all health care providers in western North America.

Location

The Laboratory is located in the Lower Mainland of BC, more specifically in Coquitlam. The street address is not directly published due to the nature of what is in the Lab.  The safety, security, and respect of the donors is Somatic Explorations paramount responsibility.
